We have a tendency, as human beings, to hold those we love tightly to us. We can be afraid that we will lose them unless we can control what they do, who they see, the choices they make. We can smother them with love... And yet, if we give them freedom... freedom to make their own choices, their own mistakes... supporting gently rather than clutching them tightly... the result is a far healthier relationship. It’s a relationship built on trust, learning and growth. If we try to hold water cupped gently in our hands, we will be able to keep it safe, drink from it, share it. If we clench our fists to try and hold it tight... we will lose it all. It can be the same with people. Hold those you love... gently.
