Notes to my younger self….. • Remember the importance of breathing deeply and taking your time; • Take the scenic route to wander and explore; • Have “no plans” days as much as possible and don’t plan too far in advance; • We only have this one wild, precious life so don’t waste it on stuff that you don’t wholeheartedly want to do and instead embrace the ‘Joy of missing out’ • Remain curious; • Novelty can be found by looking very deeply at the familiar; • Cultivate the childhood sense of awe, wonder and joy so you see the extraordinary within the ordinary which will fuel your passion for exploration, play and adventure. • Be in the wild outdoors whenever you can. • Live without regrets so there is no need for a bucket list. • Notice who you are with when you feel your most authentic self and keep them close; • Be around people who can go deep and be silly; • Before you communicate, T.H.I.N.K., am I being thoughtful, helpful, inspiring, necessary and kind? • When negativity gets hold of you notice the things you appreciate and are grateful for in your life; • Remember folk are trying to do their best so offer comfort and understanding and, if needed, seek solace elsewhere. • Your first thoughts are not always the most helpful, journal, feel the feelings, remember the learning and let the hurt go. • Lay down boundaries • Be careful who you share information with ( i.e. share to those who have earned the right to hear your stories by being good stewards of others’ stories); • Trust patterns not apologies and say ‘no thanks’ to invitations to take part in the drama; • Resist rescuing/fixing. • Limit social meds • Listen more than you talk • Remember we are all fallible human beings and can self-protect by choosing certainty over curiosity, armour over vulnerability, or knowing over learning. • Resist seeing crises as insurmountable, keep things in perspective and always be hopeful; • Be comfortably afraid by allowing your nerves to guide you rather than stop you. Go forth with a spoonful of fear and return with a wagonful of competence • Remember change is part of life whilst accepting the now and knowing this too shall pass. • Rejoice in being you and trust that your body is as strong and capable as it ever was. • During tough times know that you will get through it and, in some as yet undiscovered way, you will be better for it. • Get the basics right - eating, sleeping, exercise, stretching, writing, play and creativity. • Creativity does not need an audience, create for the sheer joy of making and the gift of absorption • Live lightly on planet Earth because there is not planet B.
