Joyful June Day 24: Childhood holidays (and my childhood, itself) will always be treasured memories. We didn’t have much money but my parents always ensured that we had a summer holiday. Because my dad worked on the railway, we all had train passes that enabled us to travel for free. Quite often, we ended up sitting on our cases in the guard’s van, because the trains were so full, or having other experiences that we still talk about now. The free travel meant that we holidayed in parts of the country we might otherwise had struggled to get to, especially as we didn’t have a car. I remember we spent summer holidays in Llandudno (photo 1), Weymouth, Newquay, Prestatyn, Minehead, Towyn, Paignton, etc. We usually stayed in caravans, or self-catering apartments. One thing I always remember is mine and my brother’s spending money. It was given to us in a sealed brown envelope and it was always very exciting to open it up, count it and think about the ways we could spend it over the course of the two weeks. 🤩 Looking back, I’m amazed at the amount we received. Like I said, we didn’t have much money so my mum and dad must have saved and saved and saved, from one holiday, to the next, to afford it. We always went on day trips, by coach, while we were on holiday too. Then there were the slot machines (I still adore the Twopenny Falls), visits to the Joke Shop, getting t-shirts printed, days at the beach, evening strolls and the like. Those were the days. 🥰 I spent a couple of hours in the garden this afternoon. It needed a fair bit of tidying. Lots of overgrown and dried up plants. There were flowers I’m not sure I remember seeing before (photos 2 & 3) and a very friendly bird (not sure what type - photos 4 & 5). Our garden is still very wild but it was time well spent. I always find it meditative. ☺️
